This spyware threat can be detected only by free Spyware Scanner software that support expanded threats.
The Spyware's Behavior
Spyware Dware includes an Adware program that connects to a server and downloads and displays advertisements.The spyware files will be able to be detected as Adware under the file name(s) Dware. Your system may crash and report an error in Dw.exe.
The adware program must be manually installed. There are several spyware programs that have Adware 'Downreceive' within them and that install it as the program itself is installed.
File names: Dw.exe
Spyware Dware's adware program uses the name "Downloadware" to display advertisements. When the adware is executed, it contacts fordaleltd.com on port 80. Dware then keeps open a connection to the server, which downloads and displays advertisements. The advertisements are generally displayed in a small browser window.
When Dware's Spyware is installed, it does the following:
Adds the value:"Downloadware"="[path]\dw.exe /H"
where [path] is the location of the file, to the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
so that the spyware program runs when you start Windows.
Creates the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\.DEFAULT
\Software\DownloadWare
and several subkeys.
Dware another key so that it can be uninstalled through the Add/Remove option in the Windows Control Panel. Removing Dware's adware using the Add/Remove option in the Control Panel seems to remove only the entry itself from the Add/Remove option; it does not appear to remove the complete spyware files from the system, and it will not prevent itself from running when the system is started. To remove the adware component entirely, we recommend that you follow the removal instructions below.
The adware component contains several bugs, and therefore may occasionally crash.
Uninstall DownloadWare using the Add/Remove Programs utility.
Delete the spyware value that was added to the registry and restart the computer.
*Make sure you run a full system spyware scan and delete all the spyware files detected as Adware under the file name Dware.
Unistalling the Spyware
Do one of the following:On the Windows 98 taskbar:
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
In the Control Panel window, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
On the Windows Me taskbar:
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
In the Control Panel window, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
If you do not see the Add/Remove Programs icon, click "...view all Control Panel options."
On the Windows 2000 taskbar:
By default, Windows 2000 is set up the same as Windows 98. In that case, follow the Windows 98 instructions. Otherwise, click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs.
On the Windows XP taskbar:
Click Start > Control Panel.
In the Control Panel window, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
Click DownloadWare.
Click Add/Remove, Change/Remove, or Remove (this varies with the operating system). Follow the prompts.
Deleting the Spyware value from the Registry
Click Start, and then click Run. (The Run dialog box appears.)Type regedit
Then click OK. (The Registry Editor opens.)
Navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft
\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
In the right pane, delete the value:
"Downloadware"="[path]\dw.exe /H"
Navigate to and delete the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\.DEFAULT
\Software\DownloadWare
Exit the Registry Editor.
Scanning for and Deleting the Spyware files
Run your free Spyware Scanner program and make sure that it is configured to scan all files.Run a full system spyware scan.
If any spyware files are detected as being infected with Adware Dware, click Delete.
