Pass By: Yungas Road, N Yungas Rd, Bolivia
The proximity of this region to the city of La Paz, especially that of Nor Yungas, has meant that towns such as Coroico, Chairo, Tocaña and Caranavi have begun to develop tourism alternatives for those seeking to get away from the city and to be in a unique contact with nature.
Regarding Sud Yungas, the most important towns are Chulumani, Irupana and Yanacachi and other small towns, good accommodation options and tourist services.
Coroico and the "Camino de la Muerte"
Coroico has a population of 23 thousand people and is essentially tourist, it was one of the towns founded by the Aymaras, like Chulumani, Coripata and Irupana. Although there are very few old buildings, you can still see remains of colonial and republican architecture in one of their houses.
Coroico streets, slopes and cobblestones, have a special charm, is surrounded by a wonderful landscape that can be observed from different viewpoints, you also have the possibility of hiking to the waterfalls of Cochuna and San Jacinto or make an ascent to the Uchumachi summit, at 2,500 meters above sea level, through a forest path that forms tunnels to reach the top, from which it has a panoramic view of the Royal Cordillera de los Andes.
There is also the possibility of visiting the "vagantes", which are stone pools in the Santa Bárbara river, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in crystal clear waters and observe the natural landscape and the citrus plantations that are very close.
The Camino de La Muerte is currently one of the best-known tourist destinations in Bolivia, it is also known as "The Most Dangerous Road in the World", it is a 65 km route from the "Cumbre", a step of high mountain in the Andes mountain range, at 4000 masl, which until 15 years ago this route was the main access road to the forest of Los Yungas.
This road becomes legendary due to its extreme danger, due to its steep slopes, very closed curves, with a single-lane road width in many segments (3 meters wide). Currently, the way to access Los Yungas towns such as Yolosa and Coroico is through a new asphalted road, so "El Camino de la Muerte" is now an expedited and almost exclusively consolidated route as a tourist circuit to carry out the downhill mountain bike. This road gained even more notoriety in February 2012 when the international channel "History Channel" shot the reality show "Rutas Mortales" on the road to Coroico, the series Rutas Mortales became famous due to the exploits made by a group of experienced truckers. for dangerous routes in the Himalayas and Alaska.
Tocaña is a small community inhabited by descendants of black slaves who arrived during colonial times and is the birthplace of the Afroyungueña saya, a hot and singular rhythm that is danced and sung in all local, regional and national folk festivals.
