Stop At: Wonchi Crater Lake, Ethiopia

Wenchi Crater Lake is 155 km west of Addis Ababa, between Ambo and Weliso. An extinct volcano, the top of which is 3380 meters above sea level, is a crater that contains a large lake, hot mineral springs, waterfalls, beautiful valleys and farmland.

You have the option of hiking the 4 km to the lake shore on your own or descending on horseback. The downhill trek is full of varied greens on the hillsides and the lake’s surface. After an hour and a couple of villages, a field opens to the shore and a small dock. You will have the opportunity for mule riding, hiking and a boat trip.

On one of the islands there is an ancient church called Kirkos monastery. One can reach the islands and the monastery by boat. Due to its unique topography, Wanchi is blessed with varieties of animal and plant species.

Wenchi Cherkos monastery that is believed to have been established by King Zerea Yaecob in the15th century. It hosts a large church bell, called the “Gondar bell”, because it is said to have belonged to Emperor Fasilidas who reigned in Gondar.
