Trekking Simien Mountains Ethiopia

Massive erosion over the years on the Ethiopian plateau has created one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world, with jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys and sharp precipices dropping some 1,500 m. The park is home to some extremely rare animals such as the Gelada baboon, the Simien fox and the Walia ibex, a goat found nowhere else in the world. Simien National Park, in northern Ethiopia is a spectacular landscape, where massive erosion over millions of years has created jagged mountain peaks, deep valleys and sharp precipices dropping some 1,500 m. The park is of global significance for biodiversity conservation because it is home to globally threatened species, including the iconic Walia ibex, a wild mountain goat found nowhere else in the world, the Gelada baboon and the Ethiopian wolf.

Itinerary

Day 1: Addis - Gondar (Flight)

Stop At: Simien Mountains National Park, Ethiopia
Morning drive from Gondar along a short gravel road to the park headquarters. Arrange entrance permits to the park and pick up our scout. This first hike is an easy one along the northern edge of the escarpment with a nice view points over the foothills and plains of northern Ethiopia. You will encounter gelada baboon along this hike.

Day 2: Trekk Sankaber to Gich (3,600 m)

Stop At: Sankaber Simien Mountains National Park, Sankabar, Ethiopia
Following the northern escarpment eastward, before we descend a little into the Kaba Valley. After that we climb up before we reach Geech Abyss and continue over a narrow ridge to a cliff where we have a spectacular view of the abyss towards the Simien foothills.
You also find a large waterfall here, where the Jinbar River plunges 500 m into the abyss. We proceed for about two hours and have lunch at the Jinbar River. After lunch we walk through fields of barley before we arrive at the idyllic village of Gich. From Gich village it is a short walk to Gich camp, which is a good area to look for lammergeyer and thick billed raven. After a relaxing afternoon, we will take a short hike up to Kedadit to enjoy sunset plus the gorgeous shaded landscapes down to the cliff side towards to the eastern direction and return to the camp for dinner.

Day 3: Trek Geech - Imet Gogo - Geech

Stop At: Imet Gogo, Ethiopia
After breakfast, you will trek for 2 hours along the grass plateau past countless bizarre outsized Giant Lobelia plants. The destination is Imet Gogo, an incredible rocky promontory that grants full round views over the Simien mountain Range. At an altitude of 3,926m you can see West back along the ridge towards Sankaber and Geech and South East across a deep gully towards the tomorrow’s ridge walk to Inateye and Cheneck Camp. The views here are arguably the best in the Simien Mountains and the drop is terrifying. From Imet Gogo, you will return to camp via the Siha Gorge for lunch. Afternoon at leisure before heading out for a short optional sunset trek to KedaDit (3760m).

Day 4: Trek Geech - Inateye - Chenek

Stop At: Semien Mountains, Ethiopia
After breakfast you will head back on the path towards Imet Gogo before detouring SE towards Inatye. The path drops into a forest of Giant Hazel before following the ridge on open grassland.
The climb to Inatye (4,070m) rewards with stunning views.
After a picnic lunch the path follows mostly downhill through open grassland and gianT lobelia towards Chenek with a number of stunning viewpoints along the way. At Chenek you can easily see the endemics Gelada Baboons and Walia Ibex.

Day 5: Gondar - Addis (Flight)

Stop At: Addis Ababa, Addis Ababa
Morning you will climb around Chenek in addition to the scenic views of surroundings including the chance to see the some of the highest mountain peaks and then back down to Chenek camp where the car waiting us to pick and drive back to Gondar for about 4 hrs. Then directly drive to Gondar airport for your flight back to Addis. On arrival in Addis, you will be mate by our company assigned staff then you will be our guest for a fare well dinner in one of a traditional restaurant with folkloric dance before your departure time. Finally Get transferred to the airport for your international flight.
