Gun Control Group Wants Firearms Ban Extended

Gun Control Group Wants Firearm Ban Extended..

A gun-control group, pointing to a recent court ruling upholding the University of Utah's gun ban, wants the Legislature to reconsider a measure that allows concealed weapons on K-12 school grounds.

Lawmakers last winter passed legislation allowing concealed-firearms license or permit holders to bring weapons to the school campuses. Last Friday, a state judge ruled the University of Utah can enforce its ban on guns on campus.

Calling the Legislature's federal firearms license regulations inconsistent and politically driven, members of an umbrella group known as Safe Havens for Learning intend to push a bill this coming session to clarify once and for all state law as it applies to concealed weapons.

If a state judge says the U. is free to pursue its no-gun policy, public schools ought to as well, said the executive director of Utahns Against Gun Violence, one of the organizations participating with Safe Havens.

A bill sponsor has yet to be nailed down, and school districts appear loathe to join the firearms fight. The university gun ruling, coupled with public firearm opinion polls shows that more than 70 percent of Utah residents oppose guns in schools.

State leaders say they are listening and insist when it comes to federal firearms licenses, they have been consistent.

They don't want guns in schools either, but until they stop the bad guys, they don't want to stop the good guys too.

The Taylorsville Republican sponsored the firearms license law that they want reversed. An urging of appeal of the university gun ruling and plans to have a bill next session asserting lawmakers' authority to override campus gun bans and permit lawfully concealed weapons on college campuses.

Under state law, concealed weapon permit holders can carry their weapons without restriction except in large airports, prisons, jails and courtrooms - areas that have security screening.

If schools promise to make their buildings more secure, they will support the gun legislation (banning concealed weapons) through. But that appears not to be the priority.

The safety of students and employees are always a concern, but they feel that firearms policies are in place to ensure that.

Jordan and Granite school districts have written policies limiting their liability for any claims or damages brought because of firearms and prohibiting employees from volunteering information about their permits. Granite's policy further states employees with gun permits will be fired for leaving a weapon unattended.
