Hair Weave and Braiding Horrors

Hair Weave and Braiding Horrors

Getting the fashionable look of a hair weave or braids requires an investment of time and money.

But that's just for the person getting the new style. The stylist may not have invested anything in hair weave training.

Braids are hotter than ever and that has licensed cosmetologists booked and busily braiding. Braiding and weaving are so hot, it's becoming a hairy situation especially for people unlicensed to do hair, and often working out of their homes and charging anywhere from $40 to $250 and possibly more.

In a home setting it's not always guaranteed that you're going to get what you are looking for. Experts say salon braids have a more professional look. However, even going to a licensed salon to get a hair weave could turn out to be a nightmare.

In Pennsylvania, The Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs is a place you can go to lodge a complaint. Especially if you suspect someone of doing hair without a license and getting paid for it. The law does not exempt weavers and braiders. Getting a license means at least 1,250 hours of training from a licensed cosmetology school.

Commissioner and Occupational Affairs say The reason for the training is the public safety issue so that we're appropriately assured that that person has a knowledge of sanitation, infection control as well as proper techniques and products to use.

Violators can face fines of up to $300 and repeat offenders could get jail time.

Some cosmetologists claim there is no school for braiding, - there is no cosmetology school that teaches hair braiding.

Licensed cosmetologists in Philadelphia's well known Baka Braiding Salon questions the attempt to regulate or license a cultural and traditional practice, especially when the use of chemicals is not involved.

Their cosmetologists said this is something that has been a natural thing since the beginning of Africa. They advocate a special license for hair braiders. For example, the state of New York requires just 300 hours of study to get what is called a natural hair styling license. Meantime, experts say if you're shopping for a hair stylist, check out the salon or beautician thoroughly, call the Better Business Bureau and ask the stylist for references.
