Hunters Given Handgun Option

Hunters Given Handgun Option

CANTON - Illinois Deer hunters will have the option of using handguns during the firearm season under a new law supported by State Rep. Mike Smith (D-Canton) and signed by the governor on Wednesday.

With the new federal fireams license law, hunters will be able to choose which firearm they use during deer season. Hunters will no longer face the restrictions on firearm use that they did under the previous gun laws.

Prior to the new federal firearms license law, deer hunters could only use handguns in 30 counties during certain periods designated by the Department of Natural Resources.

The new gun law provides that hunters may choose among handguns, shotguns, and muzzleloaders during the entire deer firearm season in 98 counties.

The federal firearms license laws also include language making it easier for owners of game preserves to open their land to year-round hunting.

Today's new pro-hunting gun law signals that hunters are law abiding citizens who can responsibly own and use handguns. Too often, legislation benefiting sportsmen have been defeated because legislators mistakenly thought it would benefit criminals. By talking to fellow legislators about the merits of the federal firearms licensing bill for sportsmen, they were able to rally more than enough support to send it to the governor, who has proven himself a friend of the responsible outdoorsmen.

The National Rifle Association, Illinois State Rifle Association, and Illinois Farmers Union support the new law.
