Chasing Wild Birds

Un-spoilt beauty lies at the west end of the fabled island of Bali, lush green forests, picturesque mountain range, crystal clear blue water, and vast stretches of pristine beaches, those are what await at the West Bali National Park. Home to over a hundred species of wildlife, and there are one hundred and sixty species of birds have been recorded in the park, including the near extinct Bali Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi), Bali's only endemic vertebrate species, the fauna icon of Bali. It was the key reason why this national park was created in 1941. By 2001, it was estimated that as few as only six individual starlings were thought to have survived in the wild, all of them in this park.

Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVING BALI TO NORTH OF BALI

Stop At: Pupuan, Pupuan, Bali
Arriving Bali, we will drive along a lonely road towards the on the north-west coast of Bali. Take the road through the farming village of Pupuan with its beautiful rice terraces, together with cocoa, clove and coffee plantations along the way until we reach Pemuteran. Rest of the evening free at leisure

Day 2: ACROSS BALI TO EAST JAVA (B)

Stop At: Banyuwangi, Banyuwangi, East Java, Java
Noon time, drive along the western tip of Bali to the Ferry Harbor in Gilimanuk. After crossing the Bali strait and reach Ketapang harbor in Banyuwangi East Java. The rest of evening at leisure.

Day 3: BALURAN NATIONAL PARK (B, L, D)

Stop At: Baluran National Park, Situbondo Indonesia
Watch the large Javan water buffaloes called ‘banteng’ grazing, observe small Java mouse deer known as kancil”, and spot peacocks strutting about displaying their colorful plumage, or eagles flying overhead. On the wild beaches, macaques are fishing for crabs with their tails.

Day 4: BIRDS OF MT. IJEN (B, L, D)

Stop At: Ijen Crater, Banyuwangi 68454 Indonesia
If you are lucky, you could spot some of the rare endemic birds of Java, such as the majestic Javan Hawk Eagle, which can be found nowhere else in the world. Catching a glimpse of this rare and endangered bird of prey is something special, as it is now rarely seen due to habitat loss

Day 5: CONTINUE EXPLORING BIRDS OF MT. IJEN - CENTRAL HIGHLAND OF BALI (B, L)

Stop At: Ulun Danu Bratan Temple, Jl. Raya Candi Kuning, Tabanan 82191 Indonesia
Continue Exploring Birds of Mt. Ijen, late noon time we will drive back to the mainland of Bali and drive to central highland. Set within the highlands of the mountainous Bedugul Regency in Bali, atop a plateau that sits on Lake Beratan, stands the majestic Ulun Danu Temple. In the mild, mountain weather, approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, the air is crisp and cool. Rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 6: CENTRAL HIGHLAND BIRDS WALK - UBUD (B, L)

Stop At: Ubud, Ubud, Gianyar Regency, Bali
Early morning walk into the highland rain forest above the stunning twin lake and explore the pristine conservation forest that provide jungle ecology and wildlife. Our Jungle man will lead you deep into this rainforest to search some honeyeater, Javan kingfisher, short tailed starling and the more footpath head off in and up the birding in this areas can be even more productive with the same species plus a chance at Sunda Thrust, Chesnut-backed Scimitar Babbler, pigeon, and other forest species. If you have more time, you could try to look for waterbirds at the twin Lake Buyan or Tamblingan. Take the chance of encountering interior orchid from Bulbophyllums, Dendrobium, Papiopedhillum, Nervilia Puncata and many more or don’t missed the chance of visiting the largest botanical garden in Indonesia with their wide collection of herbs, orchid and tree here also a home of various birds of Bali. Afterward, we will drive to Ubud, Bali's cultural heart. Balinese kings, benevolent to the arts, transformed their former court seat of into a true global village. Ubud shops, galleries and art shops blend traditional crafts with modern design. Visiting European artists, attracted by the lure of an untouched tropical paradise, were encouraged to stay.

Day 7: DAY BALI BIRD WALKS & THE SANCTUARY (B, L)

Stop At: Ubud, Ubud, Gianyar Regency, Bali
Leave early in the morning, in the country-side that surrounds Ubud situated at the very heart of Bali, you will be conducted on a variety of trails according to the cycle of the seasons. Birds over 100 species are found around Ubud, of which you are bound to see 30 or so, including Indonesian endemics such as: Java Kingfisher, Bar-winged Prinia, Black-winged Starling, Scarlet-headed Flower pecker, Java Sparrow, and many brilliant birds. You will also have occasion to see: Birdwing and Swallowtail other Butterflies, different types of rice cultivation, rustic temples and monuments, magnificent trees, stunning scenery, and wildflowers. Afterward to The Bali Bird Park which has the largest and finest collection of Indonesian birds in the world, plus fantastic birds from Africa and South America. Encompassing two hectares of botanical landscape, the park provides sanctuary to almost 1.000 birds of 250 different species. The rest of the day at leisure

Day 8: DEPARTING BALI (B)
