The site of the temple is composed of a bathing water structure, famous for its source of sacred waters, where the Balinese Hindus perform purification rituals. The source provides fresh water regularly, which the Balinese considered to be sacred. Tirta Empul means sacred source in Balinese.

Construction

The Pura Tirta Empula was founded around a great source of water in 962 AD during the Varmadeva dynasty (X-XII centuries). The name of the temple is inspired by the source of water from the ground, called "Tirta Empul". Its source is the source of the Pakerisan river. The temple is divided into three sections: pure jaba (frontal area), jaba teme (central area) and jeroan (inner area). The jaba has two pools with thirty showers that are called the Pengelukatan, Pebersihan and Sudamala dan Pancuran Cetik (poison).

The temple was dedicated to Vixnu. From atop a hill, near the temple, the modern villa was built for the visit of President Sukarno in 1954. This village is still used as accommodation for important guests.

Sacred sources

Each source in the temple has a different meaning for the Hindu-Balinese. There are sources that they avoid using for respect or tradition. Usually, the locals are accustomed to tourists in the area and are quite happy to explain and tell a little about their tradition. The tip is always open to new experiences in a respectful way.

To enter the temple it is necessary to cover the legs below the knee for reasons of respect to a sacred place. Usually, at the entrance are sarongs (kind of skirts that wrap around the waist to cover the legs).
