Stop At: Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella, Via Appia Antica, 161, 00178 Rome Italy

The Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella stands as a mighty tower along the Via Appia Antica, at a point where the road reaches the height of m. 50 above sea level. Built on a hillock that allows the view even at a considerable distance, the monument owes its survival to the fact that it was used in medieval times as a defensive and sighting tower. The marble plaque on its top recalls that this is the tomb of the Roman noblewoman Cecilia Metella, built around the middle of the 1st century. B.C.

Stop At: Palazzo Caetani, Via delle Botteghe Oscure 32, 00186 Rome Italy

Stop At: Villa di Massenzio, Via Appia Antica 153, 00179 Rome Italy

The visit continues in the nearby archaeological area of the Villa of the Emperor Maxentius (306-312 AD), a vast suburban residence, with a circus attached for competitions with floats in excellent condition. The circus is over 500 m long and was reserved for the imperial family and friends: it could hold 10,000 spectators. The remains of the villa are being restored, but it is possible to visit the imposing mausoleum that Massenzio had built for his son Valerio Romolo, who died drowned in the Tiber in 309 d. C.
