Piazza del Gesù is one of the most important, famous and symbolic squares of the historic center of Naples.

The square takes its name from the homonymous church here and has a central position with respect to the historical center of the city, in fact it is just a few steps from other important historical places, such as Via Toledo, Piazza Dante and Piazza San Domenico Maggiore.

Stop At: Gesu Nuovo Church, Piazza del Gesu 1, 80134, Naples Italy

The Church of the Gesù Nuovo took the place of an ancient noble palace, the Palazzo dei Sanseverino, when this was given to the Jesuits because of a confiscation. In creating the church, it was decided to keep part of the existing structure, in fact the façade was left intact. The visible contrast between the exterior and the interior of the church is surprising. The simplicity of the stone outside and the richness of the baroque inside make it one of the most beautiful churches in Naples.

Stop At: Complesso Monumentale di Santa Chiara, Via Santa Chiara 49/c, 80134, Naples Italy

In the heart of the historic center of Naples rises the ancient Monumental Complex of Santa Chiara. Its construction was commissioned by King Roberto d'Angiò and his wife Sancia di Maiorca. The structure involved two monasteries: one for the Poor Clares and the other for the Franciscan friars. The church today presents itself in its original gothic forms, restored after the restoration following a bombardment during the Second World War, despite its baroque transformation of the 18th century. The cloister of the monastery is perhaps the most beautiful building of the complex with its colorful majolica and its seventeenth-century frescoes depicting saints, allegories and scenes from the Old Testament.

Piazza San Domenico Maggiore takes its name from the church of the same name which you can admire the apse area that rises behind the obelisk of San Domenico.

The open space, surrounded by monumental palaces, as well as hosting the church, among the most beautiful in the city, presents the obelisk of San Domenico at the center erected on the wishes of the Neapolitans as thanks for having escaped a plague epidemic.

Also in the square is the multi-secular Neapolitan pastry Scaturchio where you can taste the typical sweets of the city.

The Sansevero Chapel is one of the most important museums in Naples. Located near Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, this church, now deconsecrated, houses masterpieces such as the Veiled Christ of the sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino, known all over the world for his marble veil lying on the body of the dead Christ, Pudicizia and Disinganno. It also hosts numerous other works, such as the Anatomical machines, two totally naked bodies where it is possible to observe the entire circulatory system.

This place reflects the genius and charisma of Raimondo di Sangro, seventh prince of Sansevero, commissioner and creator of the 18th century artistic apparatus of the chapel.

With the arrival in Naples of Charles of Anjou, the French architectural style par excellence, the Gothic style, arrived in the city. The Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore can be considered the first church to be rebuilt according to this style introduced by the architects and the workers following Carlo I.

The current plan of the Basilica, built according to the needs of the Franciscan spirit, has a single large central nave, an apse and 23 side chapels.
