Positano in Roman times was a holiday resort as evidenced by the discovery of a villa below the church of Santa Maria Assunta. Access to the villa was by sea. From the 10th to the 12th century it was part of the Duchy of Amalfi. From 1806 to 1860 it was the capital of the homonymous district belonging to the Salerno District of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. From 1860 to 1927, during the Kingdom of Italy it was the capital of 'homonym mandamento belonging to the District of Salerno.
