Stop At: Lake Nakuru National Park Kenya

Start the day early with pickup at your Nairobi hotel or from the airport, and travel to Lake Nakuru National Park in an air-conditioned minivan. Snap photos of the Great Rift Valley from a scenic overlook before descending to Nakuru town—this is the perfect time to purchase a packed lunch from a local hotel, as prices are higher inside the park boundaries. Start a game drive upon arriving at the park, setting out cross-country to see some of the wild animals that live within the reserve. Watch for endangered Rothschild giraffes nibbling foliage at the edge of the forest, and spot both white and black rhinos. Capture images of hippos and flamingoes in the broad, shallow lake, then scan the horizon for leopards and rare tree-climbing lions. Pause for a picnic lunch along the way — bringing lunch with you means you spend as much time as possible looking for wildlife — and continue exploring the reserve through the early afternoon.
