Stop At: National Monument, Jalan Taming Sari Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur 50480 Malaysia

The National Monument was built to recognise and honour who gave up their lives in the cause for peace and freedom, particularly during the nation's struggle against the threat of communism. Within the National Monument grounds is one of the world's largest free-standing bronze sculptures. It was sculpted in 1966 by Felix de Weldon, who was also the creator of the famous Iwo Jima monument in Washington DC. There are seven bronze human figures atop an oblong base and each figure denoting one of seven qualities - courage, leadership, sacrifice, strength, suffering, unity and vigilance.

The main dome of the National Mosque is designed in the shape of an 18-point star to represent the 13 states of Malaysia and the 5 central pillars of Islam, and has the appearance of a partly opened umbrella roof which symbolizes the aspirations of an independent nation. As one of Southeast Asia's largest mosques, its unique modern design embodies a contemporary expression of traditional Islamic art, calligraphy and ornamentation.

Stop At: National Museum, Jalan Damansara Muzium Negara, Department Of Museum Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur 50566 Malaysia

National Museum used to be the site of the Selangor Museum, established in 1898. After the country's independence in 1957, the new federal government built a newer, larger museum on the same spot. Today, the museum houses various exhibits depicting the historical background of the country.

Stop At: Railway Station and Administration Building, Jalan Hishamuddin, Kuala Lumpur 50050 Malaysia

Adopting a mixture of Eastern and Western styles, it was designed by A.B. Hubbock in 1910. Opposite stands the Malaya Railway Administration Building, also designed by Hubbock in 1917. Beneath the Islamic exterior, the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station resembles a typical glass and iron Victorian-era English railway building.

Stop At: Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

The huge open square, where Malaysian independence was declared in 1957, is speared by a 95m flagpole, one of the world's tallest. In the British era, the square was used as a cricket pitch. The square is surrounded by heritage buildings including the magnificent Sultan Abdul Samad Building and St Mary's Anglican Cathedral, both designed by AC Norman.

Stop At: Petronas Twin Towers, Concourse Level, Lower Ground Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Kuala Lumpur 50088 Malaysia

At the city centre, photo stops at Petronas Twin Towers - still the world's tallest twin structures, the 88-storey buildings were designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates with both towers joined at the 41st and 42nd floors by a 58 metre-long, double-decker Sky Bridge.
