Visit With The Mountain Potters

Experience what Mexican mountain-rancher life is like during this 5-hour Baja experience. Drive on beautiful desert roads, and pass through cactus forests and huge, dry arroyos to reach a working ranch in the middle of a mountain oasis. Be warmly welcomed into the home of your local hosts, where you'll take a pottery class and learn how to make tortillas with a group of no more than 10 people. Over a traditional "ranchero" lunch, learn how Baja Californians have carved their homes–and their livings–out the mountains for centuries.

Pass By: Sierra de la Laguna, Baja California Sur, Mexico

This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the traditional way of life of the mountain ranchers in Baja. We meet local potters in a true mountain oasis, and learn how Baja Californians have carved their homes and livings out the mountains for centuries. We see the simple but impressive architecture of the area and, of course, view the work and art of the potters. Getting there is half the adventure, driving through the huge, dry arroyos and the beautiful desert roads that lead us up into the mountains, passing through forests of cactus and desert life along the way.

We'll spend the day with Doña Ramona and her family on their working ranch. While Doña Ramona’s family puts together an incredibly delicious lunch for us, Ramona puts on a pottery class for the group, imparting not only her tricks for working with the local clay, but stories from her life in the mountains as well. Once you’ve created your own Baja pottery masterpiece, Doña Ramona then takes the group into the kitchen to teach each person how to make tortillas in the traditional style – absolutely fantastic! Lunch is typically several wonderful dishes, each made with fresh ranch ingredients.
After lunch we tour Doña Ramona’s ranch. We'll see her kiln and the little chapel that she has on her property for the visiting priest that comes to the village twice a month. Time and interest permitting, we wind up the trip by visiting some of Doña Ramona’s potter neighbors before heading back to Todos Santos.
