Burt Munro Cross-Country Tour

Experience the Burt Munro Challenge and ride the entire country on a custom motorcycle! We will experience the countries best roads like Lindis and Arthurs Pass, stay at hotels full of character and do it all on a one-off motorcycle. Food, accommodation, ferry costs, excursions, a chase truck and a mechanic are all provided.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Day

Stop At: Burt Munro Statue, Gala Street, Invercargill 9840 New Zealand
We will have your flight from Auckland to Invercargill pre-booked. There will be a cold beer waiting for you at the airport as we make our way to the centre of the city. The city will be a buzz with the Burt Munro event in full swing we’ll make our way around a few bars and get you will also get to see your ride for the next 9 days. Tonight we will be staying in Riverton, just a short drive from Invercargill.

Day 2: The Burt Munro Challenge

Stop At: Invercargill, Invercargill, Southland Region, South Island
We’ll have an easy start to the day with a nice big breakfast in Riverton before heading off to Invercargill to watch the pinnacle of the Burt Munro Challenge: the street race. You’ll get a good vibe from this event, it’s a Mecca for motorcyclists who value the spirit of riding over everything else. You’ll be sure to meet a bunch of diehard riders from around the world as we head out on the town once more. Don’t drink too much though, tomorrow we ride.

Day 3: Invercargill to Naesby — 188KM

Stop At: Kyeburn, Kyeburn, Central Otago, Otago Region, South Island
After a big feed we’ll hit the road, it’s time for our cross-country adventure to begin! We’ll ride start by riding through the plains of Central Otago. This place is a real beauty and is surrounded by distant mountains. Today is a special day, you’ll spend the afternoon racing around in a Maverick X3and a KTM 350 at the Kyeburn Diggings, an old gold mine site now used as our oversized playground. This setting looks like a lunar landscape, a perfect place for us to set up a short sprint race on the 160 BHP Maverick. Are you ready? There will be beers and a BBQ to spectate. After everyone has had a go at setting their best time we will head into town for your welcome dinner.

Day 4: Naesby to Geraldine Via Lindis Pass — 388Km

Stop At: Lindis Pass, Omarama New Zealand
Time for a top notch big breakfast at the local cafe, make sure you chow down as today is one of the biggest days of the trip. Make sure you have you camera with you,, today we are riding over Lindis Pass! This is arguably one of the best riding roads in the world with rolling hills, banked turns and rich colours across all of the mountains. We’ll also ride past the three iconic alpine lakes, Tekapo, (XXX) and Pukaki. We’ll stop off at Pukaki to have lunch overlooking the turquoise waters. Tonight we’ll stay at an 1806 Hotel, there’s a pool table in the bar area, hope you’ve got a good shot…

Day 5: Geraldine to Reefton via Arthurs Pass — 367KM

Stop At: Devils Punchbowl Walking Track, Punchbowl Road, off State Highway 73, Arthur's Pass National Park New Zealand
Today is also a big riding day but just as beautiful. Some people prefer this stretch of road as it the tussocks and hay have a softer look than Lindis Pass. We’ll be tackling even more corners than yesterday with the windy road to view the Devil's Punchbowl, a huge waterfall at over 100 metres. Then we will make our descent towards Reefton, dropping into the rugged coastline of the West Coast. Reefton is a cool little town and happens to be the first place to receive electricity in the southern hemisphere.

Day 6: Reefton to Renwick — 235KM

Pass By: Marlborough Sounds, Marlborough Sounds, Marlborough Region, South Island
The scenery will change a lot today as we head towards the Malborough Sounds. This piece of road will take us through dense native bush. We’re going to the best winery in Marlborough today, Bladen Wines. We’ll have a cheese platter and get to know husband and wife Dave and Christine who escaped the city life over 30 years ago to start the winery and haven’t left since. After getting well-hydrated we’ll head to our hotel for the night.

Day 7: Renwick to Wellington — 40KM

Stop At: Wellington, Wellington, Greater Wellington, North Island
Wake up, it’s time to set sail! We are off to Wellington. We’ll touch down around midday, parking up our bikes and heading out to dinner at one of the top restaurants in the country. No riding tomorrow so if you feel like going out in the capital city then nothing is stopping you.

Day 8: Wellington Free Day

Stop At: Wellington, Wellington, Greater Wellington, North Island
Today is a free day. Lie around, explore or hangout as you please. Theres so much to do in this little city, if you want a recommendation we have heaps. One that stands out is The Weta Workshop Tour which showcases the full workflow for props, costumes and design. Let us know what else you want to eat, drink and see — we’re here to help.

Day 9: Wellington to Taupo — 371KM

Stop At: Lake Taupo, Taupo Marina New Zealand
Big ride today but it sure is a good one. We’ll see the views change from cityscape to natives bush and onto the dry mountains of the famous Desert Road. We’ll also stop at our favourite army surplus store in Bulls. This is a great spot to buy some gear or a gift, just make sure you’re polite to old mate, he can be a bit grumpy. We’ll have our farewell dinner in Taupo, make sure you haven’t done anything too stupid during the trip as you may be called out on this night.

Day 10: Taupo to Auckland — 278KM

Stop At: Auckland Central, Auckland Central, North Island
Back to Auckland today! Not before some more great riding. We’ll stop off at our favourite place for pork sausages for lunch and roll into the city in the late afternoon. Our final resting spot will be Albany. Congratulations, you have just completed the Burt Munro Cross-Country! We’ll have your honorary t-shirt waiting!
