Ultimate 2 day Private Wellington Middle-earth Film Location Tour

This is the most in depth Lord of the Rings film location tour in Wellington. By allowing two days we can spend more time at each location, and get to the remote Putangirua Pinnacles, where we hike the trail to the Paths of the Dead filming location. This tour is for the most passionate of Lord of the Rings fans, and is delivered by a passionate and experienced expert guide.

Itinerary

Day 1: Weta Workshop & Wellington City Locations

Stop At: The Weta Cave, 1 Weka Street, Miramar, Wellington 6022, New Zealand
Weta Workshop design and build sets, props, prosthetics and costumes for major movies, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Mount Victoria, Alexandra Lookout Rd, Wellington 6001 New Zealand
Several Scenes from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy were filmed at Mount Victoria, including:
- "A Shortcut to Mushrooms"
- "Get off the Road"
- "Frodo's Tree"
- "The Outer Shire"
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Owhiro Bay Parade Owhiro Bay, Wellington 6001 New Zealand
"The Black Gate" filming location - a short stop at this filming location wild South Coast of Wellington City. We share some stories of filming and get an idea of the conditions that cast and crew were working under, in the world's windiest city!
Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Scorch O Rama, 497 Karaka Bay Road, Karaka Bays, Wellington 6022, New Zealand
We start out tour with a morning coffee and a slice of something delicious. This place was a regular hangout for stars of both the Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit film trilogies. It is owned and staffed by film geeks and the decor is a must see for movie and comic book fans.
Duration: 30 minutes

Pass By: Stone Street, Miramar, Wellington 6022, New Zealand
We drive past they key film industry locations in Wellington, including the Stone Street Studios and Park Road Post Production. (please note that these are live production areas and we don't actually get to visit either of these sites).

• Lunch: We'll enjoy lunch at Coco at the Roxy, located at Miramar's beautiful Roxy Cinema.

Day 2: Filming Locations, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa

Stop At: Poet's Park, Trentham, Upper Hutt New Zealand
This was one of several locations used to film the River Anduin, in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and one of the most recognisable. Scenes shot here had the Fellowship in their Elven boats between Lothorien and Amon Hen
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Upper Hutt, Upper Hutt, Greater Wellington, North Island
We visit Harcourt Park, filming location for "The Gardens of Isengard", where several scenes were shot in "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring".

Stop At: Upper Hutt, Upper Hutt, Greater Wellington, North Island
Gemstone Drive, Upper Hutt was used to film a scene where injured character, Aragorn was rescued by the horse Brego.
Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Te Marua, Upper Hutt 5018, New Zealand
This is a little-known location from an Extended-Edition scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, where character Faramir dreams of seeing his brother, Boromir's body drifting downstream in an Elven boat.
Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Kaitoke Regional Park, Akatarawa Valley, Upper Hutt 5372 New Zealand
One of the star Lord of the Rings filming locations, this is where the Elven home of Rivendell was built over many months, and features a lovely New Zealand native rainforest. Pick up shots of the "Fords of the Isen" were shot here as well.

Stop At: Fernside, Fernside, Canterbury Region, South Island
On the private country estate of Fernside, near Wellington, several Lord of the Rings scenes were shot, including the Fellowship's departure from Lothlorien, and the Gladden Fields, where the One Ring was rediscovered by Deagol and his cousin Smeagol (later Gollum).

Stop At: Pinnacles Track, Cape Palliser Road Putangirua Pinnacles Scenic Reserve, Wellington New Zealand
At the remote Putangirua Pinnacles, we take a 2 hour hike (over hilly, rocky ground), to find the unique natural formations of the Pinnacles, which were used in the Paths of the Dead scenes in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
