The village is well known for its market an event which attracts heavy tourist traffic from nearby Cusco. The area is perhaps best known for its Incan ruins, known as Inca Pisac, which is atop a hill at the entrance to the valley. The Inca constructed agricultural terraces on the steep hillside, which are still in use today.

Stop At: Archaeological Park Ollantaytambo, Ollantaytambo 08676 Peru

During the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti who conquered the region, built the town and a ceremonial center. At the time of the Spanish conquest of Peru it served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance. Nowadays it is an important tourist attraction on account of its Inca buildings and one of the most common starting points for the four-day, three-night hike known as the Inca Trail.

The most typical town in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, is an inca city where the conquerors wanted to "civilize" and establish their culture, but they were never able to achieve it completely. Its inhabitants live in the almost untouched Inca constructions where their ancestors lived and formed the greatest and most prosperous civilization in America. Its settlers, dressed in multicolored clothes, maintain their Indian race, only speak Quechua and still keep their age-old customs which they refuse to abandon.
