Day 2: Island Hopping with Picnic Lunch

Stop At: Barracuda Lake, Northern part of Coron Island, Coron, Busuanga Island Philippines
This lake is foremost unique thanks to its mix of fresh water and salt water which vary so greatly in temperature from one another you won’t be able to decide whether you want to stay on the hot or cold side of the thermocline. The limestone cased lagoon was formed by a karst sink-hole which has separated the lake from the open ocean. It is volcanic activity beneath the surface that heats up the salt water trapped inside. As you go deeper you will encounter three different thermoclines between 28° Celsius and 38° Celsius. The most surprising thermocline is at approximately 14 meters where the cooler freshwater stops and the hot saltwater starts. The change is so dramatic you can see the division line between the two types of water and swim with part of your body on one side and part of your body on the other.

Stop At: Kayangan Lake, Coron, Busuanga Island Philippines
You cruise into the ‘parking lot’, which in itself is an immaculate reef with crystal clear water. After parking the boat you take a short hike up the stairs to the viewpoint before clambering down the other side to reach the famous Kayangan Lake. It’s a crystal clear freshwater lake with unbelievable underwater rock formations, which make it one of the most incredible sites in Coron, Palawan.

Stop At: Twin Lagoon, Coron, Busuanga Island Philippines
The first lagoon is where the boats dock, while the second lagoon is hidden, the only access of which is a small crevice underneath the rock, or during high tide, a ladder over the rock. One may notice that the waters in the twin lagoons may sometimes be blurry, this is caused by the meeting of the salt water and fresh water. The temperature of the waters in the Twin Lagoons also alternates between warm and cold (similar to Lake Barracuda), where the cold freshwater meets the hot salt water. It is very relaxing to just take a life jacket and just float and drift in the lagoon.

Stop At: Siete Pecados, Coron, Busuanga Island Philippines
If you can jump straight into the water, do it and you’ll see firsthand what makes Siete Pecados the place-to-be for snorkeling aficionados — beneath its pristine waters are dancing corals and reefs boasting of their bright colours. Surrounding the place are seven rock formations that locals say represent seven children who left home to attend the celebration and never came back. Siete Pecados is for everyone — adventure seekers can dive to their heart’s delight while those who are hesitant can always put on some life jacket to take sneak peeks of the place’s underwater wonders.
