Stop At: Roman Ruins and Museum of Conimbriga, R. das Ruinas 7, Condeixa-a-Nova 3150-220 Portugal

Conímbriga is a settlement established since the Copper Age which was an important center during the Roman Empire and which remained inhabited until at least the ninth century. It is one of the most extensive and diversified archaeological sites in Portugal. It is classified as National Monument, having been the scene of excavations since the 19th century. [2] [3]

It is located seventeen kilometers of Coimbra, in the parish of Condeixa-a-Velha, two kilometers from Condeixa-a-Nova. The station includes the Monographic Museum of Conímbriga, where many of the artifacts found in the archaeological excavations are exhibited.

In Coimbra, it is clear that its famous university is the first University of the country and one of the oldest in the world. The first university registration is in 1290.

In our visit to the University, we can visit the Paço das Escolas, the very rich Joanina library, the Capelos Room, the Exam Room and the Weapons room located next to the tower where we find the best "balcony" on the river Mondego.

The Joanine Library occupies a prominent place within the University. The construction of the Biblioteca Joanina began in 1717, over the old prison of the Royal Palace, with the purpose of hosting the university library of Coimbra, and was completed in 1728, its ceiling, the frescoes were executed by the illustrious Master António Ribeiro and Vicente Nunes, and the portrait of Dom João V in the back of the room was made by the Italian Domenico Dupra.

Considered a jewel of the Portuguese Romanesque, it is the only Portuguese cathedral built during the Reconquest, whose structure remained intact until today.

Located on the banks of the Mondego, the Monastery of Santa Cruz is one of the oldest and most important monuments of Coimbra, founded in 1131 by the Canons Regrantes of St. Augustine outside the walls surrounding the city. D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, came here to attend religious services when he returned from his Christian Reconquest battles, and this is where his tomb is located, as well as that of his son D. Sancho I.

Stop At: Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, Calcada de Santa Isabel Alto de Sta. Clara, Coimbra 3040-270 Portugal

The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, also known as the Convent of Rainha Santa Isabel, is located in the parish of Santa Clara in the city, county and district of Coimbra, Portugal.

It was erected in the 17th century to replace the old medieval monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, victim of periodic flooding of the Mondego river. It was a veritable monastery of Franciscan enclosure and not a simple convent.

It is an important repository of Portuguese art from the 14th to the 18th centuries and houses the relics of Queen Santa Isabel, founder of the ancient monastery.
