Your guide Beaty was born and grew up in the township. She’ll share her unique, no-frills perspective on life and social challenges in the new South Africa. Sometimes shocking, always honest, her personal story is part of the fabric of this experience. Our fully-guided township walking tours are part of a non-profit-making social enterprise that provides income and career opportunity for local youth and safe learning environment for kids after-school. Our gallery of narrative artwork by children affected by HIV provides social commentary to the AIDS epidemic and hope for the future. Crafts for sale. All profits are reinvested to fight HIV and inspire children to make positive life choices

Stop At: MADaboutART, Sonqayi Street, Nekkies, Knysna, 6304, South Africa

We’ll be exploring Nekkies township. Our itinerary begins at MADaboutART, a social enterprise that's providing income and career opportunity for local youth and fighting HIV with art and education. In the streets around MADaboutART you’ll experience the culture and ways of the township. Learn about Xhosa traditions and the role of the Sangoma (traditional healer). On the sports ground youth teams practice soccer and netball. They might ask you to join in! You'll see many sights along the way; the contrast between traditional wooden homes and Government-built brick homes, cattle and pigs grazing among the dwellings, taverns, local shops, women doing daily laundry, every day is a different experience. Finally, we'll return to MADaboutART. You’ll join the children as they sing, paint, bead, whatever the activity of the day is (curriculum dependent). We hope you'll take a little township magic home with you (and leave a little piece of your heart with us)
