About Chancellor House

Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo ran the first black legal practice in the country from a modest three-storey building, known as Chancellor House, during the 1950s at the height of apartheid.

The major effort of their healthy practice was to help those accused of crimes against the state and of disobeying the oppressive laws, most of them pass law related, of the time in South Africa. Ironically some of these were the very crimes for which the two attorneys would later be held accountable (they were both accused of high treason, arrested late in 1956).

This uniquely curated exhibition explores the history of the Holocaust and genocide in the 20th century through a thematic lens. Visitors explore history and moral choices through the personal voices of various role players – victims, perpetrators, resisters, rescuers, bystanders and others. The exhibition urges visitors to reflect on lessons from these histories and apply them to their own lives. The exhibition includes collections of photos, testimonies, films, multi-media and unique artefacts from the Holocaust and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, with generous contributions from survivors and families based in Johannesburg.

The Apartheid Museum is a museum in Johannesburg, South Africa illustrating apartheid and the 20th century history of South Africa. The museum, part of the Gold Reef City complex, was opened in November 2001.[1]

The Apartheid Museum allows visitors to experience the racial segregation that occurred during apartheid by separating them by racial appearance classified by the width of the nose, the kinks in hair, skin pigmentation, and size of lips as well as the language they spoke an most ultimately their race. The apartheid museum is a symbol of the democracy South Africa has and diversity which was granted to the whole country in 1994.

All races are welcome at this museum.

At least five times a year events are held at the museum to celebrate the end of apartheid and the start of a beautiful democracy for the people of South Africa.[2]
