It was formed to protect the rare Mountain gorillas that inhabit its dense forests and it’s a habitant for the rare golden monkey. The park temperatures are cool owing to the mountainous nature with a home of 300 gorillas located in Virunga massif and the culture or traditional healing practices for local people covers the north slopes of the three northern Virunga Volcanoes (Muhavura, Gahinga & Sabinyo).
