London World War II Walks- The brink of war

September 3rd 1939 is the 80th anniversary of Britain declaring war on Germany and the beginning of World War II. This was the war that nobody wanted. Germany had invaded Poland on the 1st September and the Blitzkrieg had began. In this walk we will here how London prepared for the expected aerial bombing. We will walk along a number central London's most famous streets and hear how the Nations treasures were either moved from London or hidden in underground stations. We will hear how the Blackout killed 600 civilians a month in 1939 before the Luftwaffe even took to the air. We will also hear about Operation Pied Piper and relocation of 3.5 million people from civilians from the cities. Our walk will conclude at the entrance to Downing Street where from the Cabinet Room Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced to the nation 'Consequently this country is at war with Germany'
