Outlaw King is the Scottish blockbuster movie of 2018, telling the story of real-life King of Scots, Robert the Bruce.

Set in the medieval 14th century of Roberts reign, the film shows the story of Robert and Scotland’s rise against Edward I of England in the Wars of Independence and most famously the Battle of Bannockburn near Stirling. The film fairly accurately tells the story of Robert’s rise to prominence in Scotland to the english defeat and independence in Scotland in the 14th century.

Craigmillar Castle

Craigmillar is Edinburgh’s ruined medieval castle was used multiple times in the film. Craigmillar is actually newer than the period of Roberts reign but fits in well. 

Blackness Castle

Blackness Filming at Blackness near Edinburgh included the famous scene where during a cold snap an extra is suspended in a cage over the River Forth.

Linlithgow Palace

Linlthgow Palace was a halfway house between Edinburgh and Stirling castles. It was built after Robert the Bruce’s reign and lies in ruin, but it is an impressive building with an impressive view and is used as a location in the film.

Bannockburn

Bannockburn was an epic battle and major Scottish defeat in June 1314 , during the Scottish wars of independence. Today an immersive visitor centre exists near the battle site.

Stirling Castle

Once the Royal Seat of Scotland, Stirling has played a strategic role through Scotland's history. Robert The Bruce took back Stirling from the English after the battle of Stirling Bridge and the battle of Falkirk. An intimidating statue of Robert stands on the castle esplanade as a reminder of his force and reign.

Doune Castle

Doune is a fantastic 14th century medieval castle located in the small town of Doune. It. Doune has also been made famous in Outlander, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Game of Thrones.

Dunfermline Abbey

Dunfermline Abbey is the royal mausoleum for many of Scotland’s greatest monarchs. Founded as a priory in 1128, it was made an abbey by David I of Scotland.
