The Walking Tour starts on West 70th Street on the Hudson River waterfront and continues Uptown. It is approximately 4 miles of walking.

The essential part of the tour is from the cafe on the waterfront on West 70th Street to the Bird Sanctuary at 129th Street along Riverside Drive. Riverside Park is regarded as Manhattan's most spectacular waterfront park. As one of only eight officially designated scenic landmarks in the City of New York, it has a long and storied history.

Stop At: 72nd Street and Riverside Drive Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Plaza, New York City, NY 10003-8921

Eleanor Roosevelt Monument - Riverside Drive @ West 72nd Street. Created by noted artist Penelope Jencks, the eight-foot statue of Eleanor Roosevelt is constructed of bronze and stone and is located inside Riverside Park at West 72nd Street and Riverside Drive. This monument is the first public statue of a president’s wife in the nation and only the second public statue of an American woman in New York City.

Eleanor became active in the New York State Democratic Party. During Franklin Roosevelt’s term as President of the United States, she greatly expanded the role of the First Lady. After her husband’s death, she became a great advocate for the United Nations. Until her own death on November 7, 1962, she remained an active teacher, writer and an advocate for women, minorities, young people, labour and the poor.

Joan of Arc Monument

is located in Riverside Drive Island, 93rd Street, New York City.

Joan of Arc (Jeanne d’Arc in French) was born on January 6, 1412, to peasant parents in Domrémy, France. At age 13, Joan reputedly began to hear the voices of the early Christian martyrs St. Michael, St. Catherine and St. Margaret. When Joan was 16, the voices of the saints urged her to assist the French royal family in their Hundred Years’ War against the English.

Eventually, Joan of Arc led the French army in several successful battles; she was captured and sold to the British where she was convicted for Heresy, Witchcraft and other dubious charges and burnt at the stake at 19 years old.

Jeanne was ultimately She was 19 years old. Twenty-four years after her execution, the church re-opened her trial, exposed the illegalities of the first trial and exonerated her of all accusations. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.

Riverside Park Bird Sanctuary -

In 1841, famed naturalist John James Audubon bought thirty acres of land and built his final home less than two miles north of what is now the Riverside Park Bird Sanctuary. His fields and forests were alive with birdsong, and he noted their “fragrant verdure, and fruits innumerable.”

In 1916, the Women’s League for the Protection of Riverside Park became the caretakers of what is now the southern part of the Sanctuary,

Garden People’s Garden
This well-loved community garden is located between 90th and 91st Streets on the Promenade level of Riverside Park.

The Garden People got their start in 1977 at a location on 96th Street and Broadway under the auspices of the West 97-98 Streets Block Association. In 1981, when the existing garden was bulldozed to make way for a new building, the City of New York permitted community members to re-establish the flower garden at its current spot in Riverside Park.
