Hanoi is the capital - Political, educational, economic and cultural center of Vietnam. It is located on the banks of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam and is the second most populous city in the country. In Vietnamese, the city name is made up of "Ha" (stream) and "Noi" (in between). Hanoi therefore means "the city between the rivers".

Stop At: Old Quarter, Hanoi 100000 Vietnam

The old quarter of Hanoi is a must when visiting the city. It is a historic district where traders and artisans met daily. It is sometimes called the "36 corporations district". Today there are 76 of them, and a good number of them have kept their name from the time, which represents the goods that can be found there. Thus, in this old district, it is possible to walk in the street of shoes, the street of sugar, the street of leather, the street of cotton, the street of tinsmiths, ...

You can also admire the many tube houses in the neighborhood, symbols of daily life in Vietnam. In the old quarter there are also many temples and pagodas.

Stop At: Hoàn Kiếm Lake, Hang Trong, Hoàn Kiếm, Hanoi, Vietnam

Hoan Kiem Lake (lake of the restored sword) is a true symbol of the capital. This lake is at the heart of a famous legend. According to her, the emperor Le Loi would have received from a fisherman a sword caught in this lake. He would then have used this sword to fight against the Chinese invaders. Upon completion of his mission, he was allegedly hit by a turtle as he crossed the lake. In the name of the Dragon King, the turtle reportedly asked Le Loi to return the sword to him. The latter would then have understood that the sword was a divine gift to repel the invaders and he returned it to the turtle.

You can find a red bridge on this lake (illuminated in the evenings) which allows you to go to Jade Island and its Ngoc Son temple which shelters two giant mummified turtles that once lived in the lake.

Hanoi’s St. Joseph’s Cathedral is built on the site of the ancient Bao Thien pagoda, which dates from the 11th century. It was built in 1886 by the French under the episcopate of Mgr Paul-François Puginier (1835-1892). The neo-Gothic architectural style is described as resembling Notre Dame de Paris. It is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Hanoi.

The Tran Quoc pagoda (La Défense pagoda) was originally built in the 6th century. Nestled on an islet east of West Lake (Ho Tay), the capital’s largest lake, the pagoda has been reflected for 1,500 years. The oldest pagoda in Hanoi and Vietnam is renowned as the capital's spiritual center. This pagoda was classified by the Institute of the Far East as the 10th historic monument of Indochina.

The Quan Thanh temple was built during the reign of King Ly Thai To (1010-1028) to pay homage to Huyen Thien Tran Vu, the guardian genius of the North. At the time of its prosperity, this sanctuary was frequented by many pilgrims, in particular the literate candidates who came there to seek an oracle in verse.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Hanoi is the iconic water puppet show, or mua roi nuoc in Vietnamese, which means "make the puppets dance on the water". The tradition of water puppetry dates back to the 11th century and originated in the villages of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam. When the rice fields were flooded, the villagers entertained themselves with this puppet game.
