Hue transfer to Phong nha via DMZ area ( Vinh Moc tunnel ) by private car

The Vinh Moc Tunnels are located on the coast 37 kilometres north of Dong Ha. When the DMZ, the dividing line between North and South Vietnam, was created along the Ben Hai River, the village of Vinh Moc found itself at the precarious southern edge of Northern Vietnam.

Secretly built between 1966 to 1967, the red soil had to be dispersed under the cover of night to avoid detection by enemy surveillance. Three different levels were constructed – 12 metres, 15 metres and 23 metres deep – with 13 entrances/exits, including seven to the coast. Not only did this provide a breeze for ventilation, it was important for supply lines to the sea.

Stop At: Hien Luong Bridge flagpole, Vĩnh Thành, Vĩnh Linh District, Quảng Trị Province, Vietnam

Hiền Lương Bridge (Hiền Lương) is a bridge over Bến Hải River, Vĩnh Linh District, Quảng Trị Province, North Central Coast, Việt Nam. This bridge is located in 17th Parallel and in Vietnam War, it was bisected between South Vietnam and North Vietnam

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Cua Tung Beach, Vinh Linh Vietnam

Nearby Cat Son village is a short stroll along the beach. It is famous for hundreds of years of fishing and the crafts of drum-making, carpentry and mother-of-pearl inlay.

To the south of the beach is the estuary of the Ben Hai River with Hien Luong Bridge just 10 kilometers from Cua Tung Beach. The bridge lies on the 17th parallel and formed the border between North and South Vietnam between 1954 and 1975.

This symbol of separation and loss in wartime is now one of the links between Vinh Linh and Vinh Gio districts in the province. Boarding a boat at the base of the bridge, travelers can see lush rice paddies, bamboo and casuarinas trees along the river banks. The slow rhythm of life, the whisper of the wind and the rippling of the water, all bring about a feeling of peace.

About 30 kilometers offshore from the beach is Con Co Island which was a strategic position during the American war. Lush forests and fruit trees cover the island, including hardwood with resin as red as blood. In autumn, the Malabar almond trees also turn red, making the island even more picturesque.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Vinh Moc Tunnel, Vinh Th_ch, Dong Ha 520000 Vietnam

Unlike the famed Cu Chi tunnels, which were used by the Viet Cong for combat, the Vinh Moc Tunnels were bomb shelters predominantly for civilians. During bombing raids, village life carried on underground: kids attended school, women gave birth and families watched movies. The tunnels are an amazing achievement of human toil, engineering and perseverance
