Computer and IT Security Controls SECURITY IS ON every CTO's mind these days, but what's the best way to evaluate security threats? You have to come up with a risk assessment philosophy focuses on real-world threats.
Quality security is changing the way people do security. Business and IT security is organized around defining risk in a way that's measurable. Instead of measuring risk in a company, it should be measured in the world, an actuarial sort of thing. Some business security models don't believe in things like doing a risk assessment at a company or doing vulnerability testing.
What could be set out to do is figure out what percent of vulnerabilities represents real risk and how to go about figuring the risk out.
All the firewalls, all anti-virus products, all spyware scanning and all those things are there. Look at services that measure where a company is in relation to things we call "essential practices." more..

Denial of Service and Fighting Back There is more than one way to beat a denial-of-service attack, but first you will have to catch it. Two years after the well publicized attacks on Yahoo, eBay and CNN, DoS attacks are still found all over; they just are not discussed. The advent of new attack technologies, such as Naptha and Reflective DoS attacks, are making the process of protecting networks even more difficult.
|
| In a perfect world, your ISP would detect and deal with the growing number of these security attacks on its end easily. But because many ISPs do not want to take on the added burden and legal responsibility to provide, or claim to provide DoS protection, you'll most likely have to deal with DoS attacks on your own. Whether they are randomized DoS, general distributed DoS or reflective distributed DoS; you will have to work on your security arsenal. more.. |

Hackers Find Wireless Networks Wide Open Alberta hackers have discovered that two-thirds of the provinces wireless computer networks are operating with an unsecured connection.
|
The results were collected during a highly unorganized international wardriving day held in Red Deer, Alta. Wardriving, sometimes called net stumbling, is a game that grew out of an earlier activity called "war dialing," which was popularized in the 1983 movie War Games. In that film, software was used to dial many phone numbers automatically, looking for lines that are answered by modems.
In wardriving, hackers drive around with computers outfitted with wireless connectors searching for signals based on a standard called 802.11b, which has become very popular in both offices and homes where computers are networked. Also called WiFi, the high-frequency networks have an effective range of about 30 metres but can extend much farther. more.. |

Memory Sticks are Security Risk Memory sticks have been branded as the latest security risk by security firm SecureWave, whose intrusion prevention technology can be used to control the use of the popular devices in corporate environments.
|
| The alleged risk here is that many organisations run the risk of viruses and unauthorised software entering the network, as well as confidential data being removed through these small, yet powerful desktop devices. Flash memory sticks pose similar risks to those posed by floppy disks, and then some. The concerns echo those which earlier this year warned that online storage sites provided a route to smuggle data out of organisations. read more.. |

Security and Virus Prevention at Home Two things every computer owner should do immediately, are; first, run antivirus and spyware scanning software on every computer, and make sure it is set up to receive automatic updates. If your update memberships that came with your new computer have expired, it should be a priority to renew it.
|
| Secondly, if you are running Windows 2000 or XP, you should be receiving critical software fixes from Microsoft's Windows Update service. In Windows XP, you configure this by opening the system control panel and selecting the Automatic Updates tab; in 2000, open the Automatic Updates control panel. If you can deal with the notion that your computer may reboot itself after installing an update, choose the scheduled install option. more.. |
