Congress Considered Cybersecurity Legislation

As the U.S. Congress reconvened after a month-long break, legislation imposing cybersecurity requirements on private industry, including a proposal that would require public companies to report their cybersecurity efforts, may be on the way.

No bill has been introduced yet, but one proposal being considered would require companies to fill out a cybersecurity checklist in their filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Representative Adam Putnam, chairman of the House Government Reform Committee Subcommittee on Technology, Information Policy, Intergovernmental Relations and the Census, will have considered the bill.

While antispam legislation will continue to be the major technology focus in Congress this fall, Putnams subcommittee looked at the pluses and minuses of a cybersecurity reporting requirements, similar to SEC accounting reporting requirements mandated in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, Dix said. more..

DoS Holes Plugged in Apache Server
The Apache Software Foundation on Monday released a new version of its open-source Web server project to plug four potentially serious security holes.

The latest update to the Apache HTTP Server (version 2.0.47) is described as a security and bug fix release to plug holes that could lead to denial-of-service attacks.

The Foundation warned that the SSL CipherSuite directive being used to upgrade from a weak ciphersuite to a strong one could result in the weak ciphersuite being used in place of the strong one. The previous Apache HTTP Server version also contains a bug in the prefork MPM where certain errors returned by accept() on rarely accessed ports could cause temporal DoS. More..
How Spammers Make You Help Them
Bad fellas are hijacking PCs and using them to transmit spam trash. You may unwittingly be helping spammers with their annoying and often obscene come-ons all over the Web. The danger isn't just that you're helping perpetuate scams; you may also get saddled or worse - sacked with loads of problems if a junk mailer successfully sets up shop inside your computer.
Many experts agree that it is fast becoming standard operating procedure for spammers to "hijack" unsuspecting PCs - stealing their hardware and network resources to send unsolicited email. The practice has become absolutely epidemic.

Many hosting companies block thousands of hijacked PCs that are generating spam every day. And when it does happen, most victims are completely oblivious to what is going on. more..
Spotting a Hoax
Spotting virus hoaxes by observing some common text shared by many warnings:

"This virus will wipe out your entire hard drive!"

"Forward this message to everyone you know."

"If you read the e-mail it will destroy your computer."
Most e-mail virus warnings are in reality, hoaxes; and can be thought of as pesky, but harmless viruses themselves. (usually just a scare tactic, or a test to see if your email address is responsive).

These hoaxes are sometimes sent to you by well meaning but uninformed people as well. Before you continue the so-called virus you should check to make sure it is a truthful or 'credible' message you are forwarding. more..
Vulnerable Wireless Systems and Spam
War spammers are taking advantage of unprotected wireless LANs to send out millions of junk emails...possibly involving You!

The proliferation of insecure corporate wireless networks is fuelling the growth of drive-by spamming, a security expert warned. At the First International Security Users Conference in London, they warned that junk emailers are taking advantage of unprotected wireless local area networks to bombard email users with unsolicited and unwelcome messages.

These people simply drive up to a building armed with their pornographic or other email, log into the insecure wireless network, send the message to 10 million email addresses and then just drive away. more..
