Bighorn Sheep Ewes with Newborn Lambs

Bighorn Females (Ewes) have a six-month gestation period with one, rarely two, or extremely rarely three lambs being born in May. Canadian Rockies lambs born early in the season have an advantage and are more likely to survive than lambs born later due to sufficient milk production, as Bighorn mothers could be lactating at a time when food quality is lower. Newborn lambs weigh from 3.6 to 4.5 kg (8 to 10 lb) and can walk within hours. Lambs are typically weaned when they reach four to six months old.
