Khor Virap (deep pit) is located in the Ararat region, on the site of the historic city of Artashat, whose citadel was located on a low hill. In those days, the royal prisons, were with a deep hole, where they threw sinners. According to Armenian historians, Grigory the Illuminator was imprisoned in one of these pits for 13-14 years for promoting Christianity. On the site of the prison, in 642g, a porch was built, and after, in 1662, a church was built on the site of a destroyed porch, which still exists today. The church is surrounded by a fortress wall. Inside the church there are stairs that lead to the “Pit”, where Gregory the Enlightener was imprisoned.
