Self-drive Highlights of Slovakia with a hire car

Traveling across Slovakia, you’ll see the most interesting places. On your tour, you’ll see several castles, go through four national parks, you'll really visit them, go on a leisurely hike, If you like it, sample Slovak cuisine, and enjoy breathtaking views! You'll also visit one of the most beautiful castles in Slovakia: Oravský hrad, where one of the first ever vampire movies was filmed – Nosferatu.

Day 1: Vienna/Bratislava. Cicmany village. Orava castle.
The unique and characteristic element of log houses in Čičmany are their exteriors ornamented in geometrical pattern. The authors of ornaments, as rule, were women who originally adorned only the corners of houses first with mud and later with lime. However, since the 19th century the motifs were added and painted all over exteriors of not plastered log houses.

Day 2: High Tatras National Park
This day you’ll stop in the oldest National Park in Slovakia. You can take some of easy hikes suitable also for children. For example to the Huge waterfalls and mountain cottages or to the Skok (Jump) waterfall, only 3 hours of total hiking.
The High Tatras are truly unique as one can enjoy magical silence in the valleys as well as maximum relaxation. In this National Park are around 600 km of marked trails that can take the tourists to the most interesting and also hidden places of the High Tatras. You should visit also Belianske Tatry and Bachledova valley with popular treetop walk.
Only 25 minutes from Tatras mountains you can find Spiš castle with its area of more than four ha, and partially in ruins, is one of the largest castle compounds in Central Europe. Spiš Castle was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993
(Spiš castle is not suitable from November till April)

Day 3: Low Tatras National Park
The biggest National Park in Slovakia is NP Low Tatras with its 1102 square kilometers. It provides you the most stunning views on untouched forests, valleys and peaks. Slovakian caves full of stalactite formations are opened for public. You should visit one of them and also you should take a cableway to the Chopok mountain. From the Chopok peak you can take a hike to the others peaks around.

Day 4: Visit UNESCO heritage sites Vlkolinec and Banska Stiavnica
After breakfast you'll drive through the Low Tatras National Parks and one-hour journey takes you to the village Vlkolinec, remote UNESCO heritage site in the forest.
Next you'll drive to the town of Banská ˆtiavnica, next UNESCO Heritage site. You’ll take in a tour of this picturesque town.
After lunch, you’ll start heading back towards Bratislava/Vienna, passing one of the oldest castle in western Slovakia: Nitra castle. You'll see it on your right side.
