Once upon a time, more than 300 years ago, there was a small town called Kiprovets - “Bulgaria’s flower” - it was so beautiful, full of pretty houses and famous masters who traded with Viena, Venice, and Rome. Although living under the Ottoman rule, the local goldsmiths were still sculpturing glasses, arks, crosses, manuscript linings, and others. Those men were sparking the talents of Bulgarian spirit and the women were weaving carpets which were sent away to the world with encoded symbols, colors and stories.

For centuries the locals have been making unique and beautiful carpets which look like paintings made of thread. Their weaving is a whole science, kinda magic, and the craft comes from ancient times.

Today the name of this town is Chiprovtsi and together we’ll embark on an exciting tour in it where we’ll get to know the famous Chiprovtsi carpets which are part of the UNESCO’s immaterial cultural heritage list.

Itinerary

Pass By: Sofia History Museum, pl.Banski 1, Sofia 1000 Bulgaria

Our adventure starts at 9:00 am. We’ll take you from your hotel or the apartment where you stay. Then we leave for Chiprovtsi which is about 2 hours drive from Sofia

Once there, we’ll:
- Learn about the history of this fairy town
- Go back in time when ore and metal output were the main livelihoods of the locals
- Take a look at the result of the mastery of Chiprovtsi’s goldsmiths
- Dig deep into the times of spiritual flourishing of Chiprovtsi when the village was an important spiritual center
- Enjoy the colors of Chiprovtsi’s carpets, learn how they’re being made and try to decipher the codes and messages weaved into them
- See the only still existing collection of plants for carpet coloring in Bulgaria
- Visit the Chiprovtsi Monastery of St. Ivan Rilski – established in the 10th century AD and part of Bulgarian cultural heritage monuments
- Then we’ll have some spare time to take a walk around the town’s roads, see the beautiful houses, feel the fresh mountain air and drink from the spring water taps. For lunch, we can have some traditional local meat cuisine – tinsels, peppers filled with beans, Chiprovska banitza, krem caramel in pumpkin.

Expected arrival back in Sofia – 6:00 pm
