Birth of a new world statue

Sculpted by Zurab Tsereteli from the Soviet Republic of Georgia in 1991, the statue prominently depicts Columbus controlling a steering wheel, with a backdrop featuring the Niña, Pinta and Santa María traversing the Atlantic Ocean. Made of 2,750 bronze and steel pieces and weighing more than 600 tons the monument's 360 ft (110 m) height made it the tallest in the world until 1998 and still tallest in the Western Hemisphere, dwarfing the Statue of Liberty and the Monumento a la Paz (also known as Virgen de la Paz).

Just like the statue of Liberty, a smaller and modified version, named The Birth of a New Man and meant to be the European link of a two-part composition along with Birth of the New World, was adopted by Seville, Spain, and dedicated there in 1995.

Legend tells the name comes from the legend of a Puerto Rican woman, very cheerful and attractive, who always walked along the shore of a large limestone rock.

One day, as a result of an earthquake, she slipped and fell into the sea. Suddenly, on the verge of losing hope to save herself, one of the stones broke in half and the torrent of water that passed between the stones dragged her, leaving her on the sand "miraculously saving her".

It is said that this woman was called Fini-Ana and that thanks to that miracle Mar Chiquita was formed, providing her waters in which she could then swim without any danger.
