The Temple of Heaven is an imperial complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of Beijing City. The complex was the main location for the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties to pray to the heaven for good harvest. The construction of the temple complex lasted 14 years (from 1406 to 1420), during the reign of the Yongle Emperor, who was also the launcher of the construction of the Forbidden City. The complex was extended and renamed Temple of Heaven by the Jiajing Emperor in Qing Dynasty, in the 16th century. The Temple grounds cover 2.73 km2 (1.05 sq mi) of parkland and comprises three main groups of constructions, all built according to strict philosophical requirements: Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Imperial Vault of Heaven, and Circular Mound Altar.
