Originating from the clear currents of the mountains, the Sarapiquí River extends from the central mountain range, just north of San José to the San Marcos River which flows along the Costa Rican border with Nicaragua. The river is considered a national monument due to the important service it provided in 1856 at the time of the war against the filibusters. This river was the means of transport for weapons, merchandise and soldiers
