In North Bohemia lies the city of Terezín, a former military fortress composed of citadel and adjacent walled garrison town of Litoměřice District.

The Terezín Memorial in the town of Terezín was built as a Baroque army fortress by emperor Josef II. Then the fortress served as a prison. But the darkest period of the city belongs to the years of WWII when Terezín was adapted by the Gestapo as a ghetto for the Jews and concentration camp. The complex was taken over only in May 1945.
