Emerald Pool & Trafalgar Falls Water Adventure

Guests will depart from Roseau to the Emerald Pool driving through Canefield arriving at the Emerald Pool. This wonderful waterfall grotto is located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Morne Trois Piton National Park. An easy 30-minute hike takes the guests through magnificent overhanging trees and lush vegetation to the pool, which appears green in the tree-filtered sunlight. Guests will be able to go for a dip, and swim right up to the waterfall!

On the way back there are two view points where the Atlantic Coast and Morne Laurent can be seen to the left, rising to an elevation of 2,248 ft. Breathtaking!

Following the visit of the Emerald Pool, guests will go to the Trafalgar Falls. It is a short 10 to 15 minute walk along a well-maintained path from the Visitor Reception centre, where you can photograph both falls from a viewing platform. The more daring can continue on to swim in the refreshing waters of the smaller waterfall or find the hot springs at the tallest falls.

Stop At: Emerald Pool Nature Trail, Morne Trois Pitons National Park Dominica

The trail to Emerald Pool is located 3.5 miles north-east of Pont Cassé, near the road to Castle Bruce, and is the most accessible trail in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park.

Vegetation zones are determined by two main factors: climate and soil conditions. These zones occur in defined levels around our mountains. The ¾ mile loop trail to Emerald Pool passes through a Transition Zone of forest, and cannot be considered true Rain Forest or Montane Forest. Other trails in the Park have been established through rain forest and Elfin Woodlands.

As you move along the trail, note the prop roots of the Palmist, Mang Blan and Karapit trees; the large buttresses of the Chatannyé trees; and the pillar-like trunks of the Gommier trees. Other trees near the trail include Bwa Dyab, Bwa Bandé and Bwa Kòt. Also note the tree ferns.

Notice too, that there are relatively few shrubs, the majority of smaller plants being young trees. The massive canopy overhead shields out the sunlight. Hence, many vines strive upwards towards the light, while some send down their roots once they are established in the canopy.

Stop At: Trafalgar Falls, Morne Trois Pitons National Park Dominica

Situated east of the picturesque village of Trafalgar is one of Dominica's most popular natural attractions: the Trafalgar Falls. A 10-minute walk will take the visitor to a viewing platform for a panoramic view of twin waterfalls which plunge about 125 ft and 75 ft respectively. A major rockslide in September 1995 buried the once popular hot springs and pools at the base of the waterfall to the left.

The once taller waterfall, i.e. the one to the left, is popularly referred to as the "Papa Falls" and the shorter, but stronger one is affectionately called the "Mama Falls"; they are both on tributaries of the Roseau River. The "Breakfast" River that hikers cross en route to Boiling Lake is one of those tributaries, and it tumbles into the shorter waterfall. The water that leaves the Freshwater Lake area flows through Ti-Tou Gorge before cascading in the Papa Falls.

As you walk the trail, note the orange coloration in the small spring that flows across the trail. This is caused by iron compounds in the clay and not by sulphur. Sometimes the water may be slightly warm, and this is further evidence of Dominica's volcanic origin. The stream coming from the hot springs at the base of the Papa Falls is much warmer.
