Itinerary

Stop At: The Temple of Horus at Edfu, Adfo, Edfo, Aswan Governorate, Egypt

The temple was built to the glory of god Horus in 237 BC during the Ptolemaic period. At the time, it was a copy of the old architectural style. Long buried under the sand, it was cleared by the French archaeologist Mariette, in a state of preservation quite exceptional, even if on the side of the paintings everything was tarnished. The temple is impressive in size and meets the classical pattern. We can not dream of a more limpid construction; a large entrance pylon, a courtyard, two hypostyle halls, chapels and at the bottom, the sanctuary with its naos "kind of little granite cabinet, which contained a precious statue of the god".

Stop At: Temple of Kom Ombo, Nagoa Ash Shatb, Kom Ombo 81611 Egypt

Forty kilometers north of Aswan, 160 kilometers south of Luxor, on the right bank of the Nile, was the town of Noubit. Today, on the site of the ancient city stands no more than the Greco-Roman temple of Kom Ombo, part of which collapsed in the Nile. Ptolemy VI (180-145 BC) was at the origin of the construction which continued with other Ptolemies and ended in the third century. A double wall surrounds all buildings. It is a double temple, it presents a duplication of the sanctuary and all the doors and passages which, from the entrance, lead to the naos. The southern part of the temple is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world, the other part is dedicated to the god falcon Haroeris, also known as the elder Horus.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Temple of Khnum, Esna City, Esna, Luxor Governorate, Egypt

The city of Esna is located about fifty kilometers south of Luxor. The temple of Esna is dedicated to Khnum: god creator potter, with ram's head, he is also the one who controls the flood. In Esna, the god Khnum is part of a triad alongside Menhyt, a lioness goddess, and their child Heka, magic.

What we see today of the temple of Esna is a pronaos plated on an earlier temple, destroyed to the foundations. This temple, which dated from the New Kingdom and which was several times redeveloped especially in the Ptolemaic period, included a pronaos, a hypostyle hall, an offering room, a room of the Ennead and a naos. The most recent part of the present temple was built by Tiberius around 14 AD. AD and the decoration continued under the reigns of several Roman emperors until that of Decius, persecutor of the Christians.
