German labyrinths in Georgia

Bolnisi, the German District, interesting streets with their mysterious stories, a German wine cellar.

This tour is a great opportunity to explore the atypical and precious world of the German heritage in Georgia. Much this is concentrated in Bolnisi, and offers different sights to the visitors: interesting streets, special wine-cellars, distinct interior, and one of the most exciting – stories. These are the stories of people moving here, different cultures coexisting and thriving, and the way the relationship and influence continues today.

The program of the tour:

We will start our journey by meeting the guide at your hotel, and starting driving in our comfortable vehicle, heading towards the Kvemo Kartli region. The road here is pierced with history and prehistory. We are going to drive by the first Neolithic settlements of Georgia – dating back to time, when the people domesticated animals and tried agriculture for the first time. There are going to be several “hill-settlements” on the way, representing the famous and intriguing Shulaveri-ShomuTepe Culture.

Another wonderful place in the same area is the birth-place of wine. The oldest remains of viticulture in the world have been found here. They are as old as 8000 years. Thanks to this discovery, Georgia is now considered to be the first country where the wine was produced. By the way, the term “wine”, which sounds similar in many languages, is now thought to come from the Georgian “Ghvino”.

Our main destination today is Bolnisi. It is an interesting Georgian town, known for the relief of the Bolnisi Cross, for ancient inscriptions, mineral waters and religious sights, cuisine and agriculture. The German colony Katharinenfeld was founded here in 1818 and has an interesting history.

We will discover the interesting infrastructure, find out more about the history of the German settlement here, about their stories and their lifestyle. We will be guests at one of the wine cellars. It includes the old wine barrels and various objects, which we will gladly tell you about. At the end of the tour, we will have a wonderful opportunity to listen to the German classical music masterpieces, performed live by a young pianist Otar Ochkhidze.
