Vardzia -is a unique monument of Georgian architecture. The rocky city is located in Aspindza, at an altitude of about 1,300 m. The territory of Samtskhe-Javakheti served as a barrier separating the rest of the country from the Muslim world. This place was also used for gathering and reviewing all-Georgian troops launching lengthy campaigns. King George III decided to build it not as an ordinary fortress, but as a huge fortified military quarter with a constant large and ready to attack place.
