Stop At: Shuamta Monasteries, Shaumta Shaumta Village, Telavi 383330 Georgia

The architectural ensemble Dzveli Suamta is situated 7km of Telavi. It consists of a 5th-century basilica, one of the most curious examples of Christian Georgian architecture, a 17th-century domed church, a small 7th-century domed church. The church was built of cobblestones; the corner was faced with hewn stones. In the 16th century, Zveli Shuamta Monastery was abandoned. Not far from it a new, Akhali Shuamta Monastery was built by Tinatin Gurieli, the wife of King Levan II (1520-1574). The Church had a dome and was designed in the form of a cross in plan. It was built of brick. The inner walls were decorated with paintings and some of the portraits of the founders. The Church was restored by Irakli II. The complex includes also a bell-tower and some minor buildings.

Stop At: Alaverdi Monastery, Alaverdi Georgia

Alaverdi Monastery is a Georgian Eastern Orthodox monastery located 25 km (16 mi) from Akhmeta, in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia. While parts of the monastery date back to the 6th century, the present-day cathedral was built in the 11th century by Kvirike III of Kakheti, replacing an older church of St. George. The monastery was founded by the Assyrian monk Joseph (Yoseb, Amba) Alaverdeli. He came from Antioch and settled in Alaverdi, then a small village and former pagan religious centre dedicated to the Moon. At a height of over 55 m (180 ft), Alaverdi Cathedral was the tallest religious building in Georgia, until the construction of the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi, which was consecrated in 2004. However, its overall size is smaller than the cathedral of Svetitskhoveli in Mtskheta. The monastery is the focus of the annual religious celebration Alaverdoba. Situated in the heart of the world’s oldest wine region, the monks also make their own wine, known as Alaverdi Monastery Cellar.

Telavi is the main city and administrative centre of Georgia’s eastern province of Kakheti. Its population consists of some 19,629 inhabitants. The city is located on the foothills of the Tsiv-Gombori Range at 500–800 m (1,600–2,600 ft) above sea level. In this beautiful city, you can walk in the streets and take pictures. Also, you will visit Fortress Batonis Tsikhe (“Fortress of Master”) built in the 17th century; one of the only well-preserved medieval royal palaces in Georgia. In Telavi, you are going to see Monument of king Eekle II and 900 years old plane tree

Stop At: Signagi City Walls, Signagi Georgia

Signagi or Sighnaghi is a town in Georgia’s easternmost region of Kakheti and the administrative centre of the Signagi Municipality. Although it is one of Georgia’s smallest towns, Signagi serves as a popular tourist destination due to its location at the heart of Georgia’s wine-growing regions, as well as its picturesque landscapes, pastel houses and narrow, cobblestone streets. Located on a steep hill, Signagi overlooks the vast Alazani Valley, with the Caucasus Mountains visible at a distance. Signagi and its environs are home to several historical and cultural monuments and have been specifically protected by the State since 1975. The town is walled with the remnants of 18th-century fortifications. There are two Georgian Orthodox churches in the town itself. The local Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum dating from the 1950s was upgraded and developed into a modern-standard exhibition the – Signagi Museum – in 2007. Signagi is known as the “City of Love” in Georgia, with many couples visiting it just to get married. Here you can walk in the narrow nice streets, get unforgettable memories, take amazing pics, taste wine and buy souvenirs.
