Fortezza Fortress guards a powerful approach to the city from the sea
Ida mountain range stretches in the southeast. From this location
Rethymno seems so cozy and sheltered. Its really very

The Venetian fortress of Fortezza, built in 1573-1590 is
one of the main attractions of the city. On its territory

considered one of the largest venetian ever built
fortresses!

Monastery of St. Irina. The first written source in which it's
mentioned, dates from 1362. However, in 1821 the monastery was empty, and
in 1867 it was completely plundered by the Turkish conquerors. Only in 1989
it was decided to restore it, and three nuns were set off for the
restoration of the holy monastery. Almost all buildings required
restoration, and only the sacred cave now recalls how everything
looked many centuries ago. She served as a monastic monastery back in the 6th
century, long before the appearance of the first monasteries in Crete. Nowadays, for
the contents of the monastery, nuns are engaged in various types
needlework such as sewing, weaving, embroidery and cooking various
cosmetics based on medicinal herbs and olive oil,
and also write icons in the Byzantine style.
