Stop At: The Venetian Fortezza, Rethymnon, Crete Greece

The charming city of Rethymnon is justifiably considered one of

the most beautiful in Crete. It has a unique characteristic,narrow

streets, carved window frames, the old port and the majestic fortress

Fortezza makes a really unusually warm impression.

Retaining the features of a true Cretan city, Rethymnon is rapidly developing and

It attracts as tourists so and artists and musicians. You

can certainly see their creations on the streets of the city. Ancient

Fortezza Fortress guards a powerful approach to the city from the sea

Ida mountain range stretches in the southeast. From this location

Rethymno seems so cozy and sheltered. It’s really very

pleasant, unhurried life, which can be felt especially acutely in

Old town. Almost completely blocked from cars, he creates

a special relaxed atmosphere that calls to stay in

one of the many outdoor cafes to enjoy it.

The Venetian fortress of Fortezza, built in 1573-1590 is

one of the main attractions of the city. On its territory

there was an incredible number of different outbuildings,

Episcopal Palace, house of the rector, barracks for the garrison, various

reservoirs, churches and an outdoor theater. It is so massive that

considered one of the largest venetian ever built

fortresses!

We will definitely see the famous Rimondi fountain - another symbol of

Rethymnon. This is a fountain consisting of three lion heads, water from the finished

pours into three ponds. “LIBERALITATIS” and “FONTES” read the words above

heads of lions, which means “Generous spring”

Stop At: Agia Irini Monastery at Kroussonas, 5 km from Rethymno, Krousonas, Crete Greece

Monastery of St. Irina. The first written source in which it's

mentioned, dates from 1362. However, in 1821 the monastery was empty, and

in 1867 it was completely plundered by the Turkish conquerors. Only in 1989

it was decided to restore it, and three nuns were set off for the

restoration of the holy monastery. Almost all buildings required

restoration, and only the sacred cave now recalls how everything

looked many centuries ago. She served as a monastic monastery back in the 6th

century, long before the appearance of the first monasteries in Crete. Nowadays, for

the contents of the monastery, nuns are engaged in various types

needlework such as sewing, weaving, embroidery and cooking various

cosmetics based on medicinal herbs and olive oil,

and also write icons in the Byzantine style.
