We begin at Agios Nikolaos and after just 10 km, we arrive at Elounda. This renowned tourist destination boasts luxury hotels, numerous taverns and restaurants, recreation facilities and a landscape of unparalleled beauty.

You may take photos of the bay of Elounda, the Venetian channel, the windmills and the saltpans.On our way to Cape Aforesmenos we will be overlooking the historic island of Spinalonga that initially was a Venetian (subsequently Ottoman) fortress - base and in the 20th century it served as a leper colony. It is the second most visited monument in Crete, second only to the Palace of Knossos and it has been nominated for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.The visit to the island of Spinalonga is optional!As we continue our journey, we come across traditional villages with kind-hearted people

Pass By: Spinalonga fortress, Agios Nikolaos, Greece

The Venetian cartographer Vincenzo Coronelli reports that Spinalonga was not always an island, but was once linked with the adjacent Peninsula Spinalonga. He mentions that in 1526, the Venetians cut down a portion of the peninsula and thus created the island. Because of its position the island was fortified from its earliest years in order to protect the entranceway of the port of Ancient Olous.
