Dashashwamedh means ten Aswamedha Yagyas. In ancient India,

an ambitious king would dispatch a horse accompanied by his

warriors, and allow the horse to wander anywhere it liked. The

King would then proclaim sovereign right over all territory that

the horse covered. In case a local king wanted to challenge the

sovereignty of the invading king, he was expected to fight a battle

against the King's army which followed the horse. If the horse

then returned unconquered, it would be sacrificed in a

celebration called a yagya as the King claimed his right over all

the territory the horse had covered. Thus, the ghat must have

gotten this name because ten such yagyas were performed here.. The crowd swells in the evening as they gather to witness the

or Horse Ghat because - when the Bharashivas performed their

ten Ashvamedha Yagyas on Dashashwamedh Ghat, a stone horse
