The Kohinoor Diamond trail is a tour of Warangal from Hyderabad to trace the journey of the famous Diamond from Warangal to the British Crown, and to rediscover the cultural legacy of the Kakatiya Empire. We begin at the Bhadrakali temple where the left eye of the deity used to be the Kohinoor Diamond. Visits to 1000 pillar temple and Warangal Fort help appreciate Kakatiya’s architecture, progressive social reforms introduced to break the shackles of the caste system and an efficient administrative system appreciated by Marco Polo.

Stop At: Bhadrakali Temple, Warangal City, Warangal 506002 India

7AM- We drive for 3 hours to reach Warangal.
Bhadrakali temple is the first destination in this tour of Warangal. It is one of the oldest temples dedicated to the worship of the mother goddess. It is this deity of the goddess which had the Kohinoor diamond as it left eye in the 14th century. Built in AD 625, it is located in a picturesque setting on the banks of the Bhadrakali Lake. The temple structure is supported by square pillars a unique style statement in architecture. A highlight of this temple is the sculpture of a fierce lion, the sacred vehicle of the Goddess, facing the sanctum.

Stop At: Thousand Pillar Temple, Warangal 506001 India

Our next destination in the tour of Warangal is the Thousand Pillar Temple, one of the finest specimens of Kakatiya architecture. Constructed in the 1163 AD by King Rudra Deva, the temple has three shrines, which are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Vishnu and the sun god. The temple has 1000 pillars, each of which is embellished with rich carvings. The highlight of the architecture is that the 1000 pillars are constructed in such a way that none of them obstruct the view of the shrine.

The entire temple resembles the shape of a star and the pillars have intricate carvings of artwork on them. The design of the temple is such that the morning rays of the sun fall directly on the Shiva Lingam .

Stop At: Warangal Fort, 12 km from Hanamkonda, Warangal India

The Warangal Fort was built on a hillock called Ekashila in the 13th century. Considered as one of the architectural masterpieces of Kakatiya Dynasty, the Warangal fort was constructed by King Ganapatideva and later by his daughter Rani Rudrama. The fort has withstood many wars including the one where Allaudin Khilji sent a one million strong army in 1309. Inside the fort are interesting temples, inscriptions and a few ponds as well.
