It was the first headquarters of the first commissioners in Mysuru. Colonel Arthur Wellesley had stayed here and it was the headquarters of Colonel Arthur between 1799 and 1801.

This market dates back to the reign of Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. At the time it took the form of a small weekly market where fresh vegetables and fruits were probably the most traded items. Today, the market has over 800 shops and is spread over 3 acres of land.

Mysore Pak, first cooked in the royal kitchen of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the cook credited with the sweet is Kakasura Madappa. The original taste still runs in this shop. Madappa's great-grandson, Mr Nataraj now runs the shop and is possibly the last link of the royal kitchen.

Lord Dufferin was the Viceroy of India during 1884–1888. What is popularly known as Chikkagadiyara seen at the end of Devaraja Market close to Krishna Rajendra Circle was commissioned in his honor.
