Abbazia Santa Maria di Morimondo Cloister Entrance Ticket
The abbey of Morimondo, unlike the traditional Cistercian and Benedictine buildings in general that are built in plan, is built on several levels. In fact it is built on a depression, so it presents a total of four levels that are well identified on the eastern side. Starting from the top, we have the quota + 4.90 meters corresponding to the dormitory, at the altitude +0.00 meters are the cloister and the scriptorium, to -4,60 meters the weaving room and finally to -8,80 meters the hall of the founders.
The locals of the cenobio, whatever the purpose for which they are used, have a similar structure, simple, linear and at the same time elegant, because for the monk every activity, and not just prayer, must be a praise to God.
Visit: Abbazia Santa Maria di Morimondo, Piazza Municipio 6, 20081, Morimondo Italy
All the rooms of the monastery find their connecting point in the cloister; it occupies a central place for the life of the monk as it is a place of silence and prayer. Its name derives from the Latin «claustrum» which means closed, in fact it has no outlets directed to the outside and communicates only with the sky just to remind the monk the only reason for his life: to have the mind fixed in God. Currently the cloister of Morimondo is presented in its essential medieval plan. There are two more recent insertions: three Renaissance porticoes of the very early 1500s and two palaces of the mid 18th century. The north side retains the original appearance
