Pompeii was one of the largest and brightest cities of the Roman era. The great production and export of oils and wines made it a very rich city, which became a tourist destination for the Roman patricians. How it would have become Pompeii if in '79 AD Vesuvius, which no one knew yet to be a volcano had not destroyed it with the violent eruption. The excavations are a chilling testimony. The city attracts millions of tourists during the year also due to the presence of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Holy Rosary, a Basilica that gathers thousands of ex-votos and that enjoys a particular veneration by of Catholics from around the world. In the days when the entreaties are held at the Madonna, the city welcomes about six million pilgrims who reach Pompeii with their own vehicles and organized buses.
